esports law news Let’s take a quick look at recent happenings in the esports legal world.

Esports Observer Survey: Athletes Concerned About Intellectual Property and Cyber Security

What are esports athletes’ main legal concerns? The Esports Observer published study results addressing the question.  According to the report, professional gamers are most interested in the following.

  • Cybersecurity and Malware Attacks: Like many folks, professional esports players are concerned about digital security breaches. To wit, popular streaming site Steam has suffered several malware attacks that jeopardized player accounts and had the potential to expose sensitive information. Hardware tampering is another concern.
  • Intellectual Property Protection: Player brands are a huge part of the professional gaming profit formula. Professionals need to consider copyrights and trademarks and merchandising legalities.
  • Cyberbullying: Psychological agility is a critical component of elite game play. As such, for esports athletes, cyberbullying is a professional hazard. Thankfully, there are legal ways to shut down cyberbullies, and an esports lawyer can help.

Esports In The Olympics?

There’s been lots of chatter, and recently, authorities took another step to “olymp-ifying” esports.

Representatives from the International Olympic Committee, Global Association of International Sports Federations, and esports industry luminaries met to discuss mutual goals. Everyone seemed keen to pave a path for Olympic esports, but they also recognized that “an organization does not currently exist that represents esports global and could align with Olympic values, rules, and regulations.”

All, however, is not lost. Even though participating organizations have yet to finalize Olympic-class esports, there are plans for “ongoing dialogue and engagement” between all the parties.
