Esports may soon have an “official” brew — at least that’s what Anheuser-Busch hopes. The conglomerate recently filed a trademark application to become “THE OFFICIAL BEER OF ESPORTS.”
Anheuser-Busch’s Esports Trademark Move
Anheuser-Busch has always liked to attach itself to the sporting scene. The company has long sponsored NASCAR events and entwined itself with the NBA and MLB. Now, one of America’s oldest breweries wants to become “THE OFFICIAL BEER OF ESPORTS.” It also wants to scoop up “THE OFFICIAL BEER OF GAMING” and “THE OFFICIAL BEER OF GAMERS” titles.
This is not the first time Anheuser-Busch has moved to become the beverage of an entire sport. Just last year, it inked a deal with NASCAR for Busch Beer to become of the official beer of that league. Moreover, they’ve already dabbled in the esports arena, having secured deals with the Overwatch League and the NBA2K Washington Wizard’s team.
Should Esports Even Have An Official Beer?
Some concerned citizens aren’t sure about Budweiser’s esports trademark play. After all, gaming events can draw a younger crowd. But as the industry matures, so does its viewership. In fact, according to famed data research firm Nielsen, the average age of esports fans is 31, and 16 percent of the viewership is over 44 years old.
